You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. (Isaiah 26:3-4)
Did you know that those who seek peace are in the middle of a storm? It seems that we go from storm to storm nowadays. The world seems to be tilt- ing off its axis to say the least.
Our God is a God of miracles. The storm is not too great for Him. “And He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was agreat calm” (Mark 4:39).
Often the real storm is one that ravages within. Real peace comes not from calming the storm outside, but from calming the storm within. Only Jesus is able to give this peace. Otherwise, it would be peace only as the world gives.
Why are you restless and afraid? Do you not know that your Lord is in control? He has things well in hand. Be still. Do not try to make your own peace. Listen to the booming voice of His holiness: “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: ... ‘Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like His? ... Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you’” (Job 40: 6, 9, 14).
If you cannot save yourself or control the storm, what can you do? Stay your mind on Jesus. Seek Him where He may certainly be found: in His Word, in the baptismal water through which you were saved, and in His body and His blood. Hold fast to Jesus and nothing else. He alone will keep you in perfect peace.
In this world, do you have trouble? Take heart, Jesus has already overcome the world. Fight the battle, knowing Your Captain has secured the outcome. Let the storm waves wash over you as you joyfully stand on the everlast- ing, immovable Rock . Nothing will wash you away. Put your head down and lean into the wind with courage.
Peace be with you,
